Honda announced today that it will introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the Accord, to hit the market in early 2013.

The 2014 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) Sedan will feature a two-motor hybrid system and will get 100 miles per gallon, Honda says.

The 6.7kWh lithium-ion battery will support driving in electric mode for 10-15 miles. The Accord can also drive in "HV" mode, blending electric and gas power. It will feature an impressive range of 500 miles on a full tank and battery.

"HV Charge" mode will also use hybrid power, with a focus on recharging the battery. Regenerative braking expands the Accord's range as well. Honda promises a three hour charge time for a full battery.

The plug-in version will serve as the model for a conventional hybrid Accord, to hit the road in the summer of 2013.
