Kia recently announced that it will be adding free updates for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to its vehicles from as far back as the 2014 model year, reported Engadget.
The Korean auto manufacturer said that this update will be available for any vehicle equipped with its UV03 infotainment system or a compatible navigation system, and will be available as a software update that can be downloaded to the vehicle.
Android Auto is Google’s solution for in-vehicle infotainment, bringing the power of a smartphone inside the vehicle, while CarPlay is Apple’s counterpart. The two platforms bring many of the same capabilities to the table. Both systems allow users to send messages, pull up directions, use music apps such as Spotify or SoundCloud, and make phone calls while they’re driving without needing to take out their smartphone.
As more vehicles are connected to the internet, systems such as Android Auto and CarPlay will take off. BMW already connects every vehicle in its lineup, and the German auto manufacturer recently announced that it will integrate its vehicles' software with owners’ smart home technologies. Additionally, LG is partnering with Volkswagen to construct a connected car platform that would likely include the ability to control smart home devices.
Over the past year, there has been a significant uptick in the number of connected cars on the road. And as internet integration becomes more commonplace, the automobile as we know it will transform.
Over the next five to 10 years, this internet integration is expected to change the car ownership model, create a new platform for consumers to access content, lead to fully autonomous vehicles, and revolutionize the auto industry.
The market position of the car today is similar to where the smartphone was in 2010 — it's just taken off and is ready to explode.
