The FBI issued a warning Thursday reminding drivers that car hacking is a very real risk.
The statement was in response to a Wired article that exposed a major security flaw in Jeeps. In the article, two hackers remotely shut off a Jeep's engine while it was driving in traffic.
The report led Jeep's parent company, Fiat Chrysler, to recall 1.4 million vehicles. The affected cars include Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, and Jeep.
The FBI notes the Jeep hacking in the warning, stating that as vehicles include new connected technologies, there's a greater risk that your car could be hacked.
"However, with this increased connectivity, it is important that consumers and manufacturers maintain awareness of potential cyber security threats,"the warning reads.
But there are ways drivers can protect themselves from hacking. The FBI warns drivers to ensure their car's software is up to date, to be careful making unauthorized modifications to their car's software and when connecting to third-party devices, and be wary of who has physical access to their car.
